Speech Contests

Speech contests are a Toastmasters tradition. Each year, thousands of Toastmasters compete in the Humorous, Evaluation, Tall Tales, Table Topics and International Speech contests. Competition begins with club contests, and winners continue competing through the Area, Division and District levels. Winners of the District level International Speech Contest proceed to the region quarterfinal level. Following region quarterfinals, winners advance to the semifinals for a chance to take part in the World Championship of Public Speaking.

These provide an opportunity for Toastmasters to gain speaking experience as well as an opportunity for other Toastmasters to learn by observing proficient speakers.

1. Toastmasters contests helps people to get out of their comfort zone. All the skills learned in our respective clubs get tested in the speech contests competition.

2. It helps you refine your speech, making it better every time you deliver it.

3. You get an opportunity to meet other strong speakers and learn from their styles.

International
Speech
CONTEST

The International Speech Contest begins at the club level, and proceeds through the area, division, district, semifinal, and International levels. The club level contest starts in Feb/ March and culminates at the international convention in August.

Eligibility criteria for the contest are: member has to be in good standing and member should have completed CC 6 of Competent Communicator manual or Level 2 of Pathways program.

Speaker has to speak for five to seven minutes .

Table TOPICS

Contest

In the Table Topic Contest, all the contestants participating will receive the same topic, which shall be a general rule of thumb that the topic is selected by the contest chair. The topics are open-ended in nature and the contestants will be given this topic at the same time when they are introduced by the contest chair.

A contestant would need to speak for one to two minutes.

HUMOROUS
SPEECH
CONTEST

The Humorous Speech contest follows all the rules outlines in the general rules of the rule book. The subject or topic for the Humorous speech contest shall be selected by the contestant but should avoid potentially objectionable language, anecdotes and material. The speech follows the same timing as that of the International Speech Contest.

A contestant would need to speak for five to seven minutes.

Evaluation

At the beginning of the contest, a test five to seven minute test speech would be present by the and at the end of the speech, the contestants will be requested to leave the room. The contestants would have to prepare their evaluation within five minutes using the evaluation contestant notes sheet provided. At the end of five minutes, the first contestant would be requested to give the evaluation while the other contestants submit their evaluation sheet to Sergeant-At-Arms.

A contestant would need to evaluate for two to three minutes.
